We also brushed up on prime and composite numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<section>\n<h3>Adding and Subtracting Fractions<\/h3>\n<p>The key to adding and subtracting fractions is finding a common denominator. Let&#8217;s move right on to mixed numbers&#8211;that&#8217;ll serve as a fractions refresher as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>For addition and subtraction with mixed numbers, it is easiest to leave the numbers as mixed numbers. Many people were taught to convert them into improper fractions, which is necessary when multiplying and dividing but just complicates everything for addition and subtraction.<\/p>\n<p>You still need a <abbr title=\"A number into which all the denominators of a set of fractions can be divided.\">common denominator<\/abbr> for the fractions. At the end of the problem, you may need to convert the answer into a proper mixed number, so that you don&#8217;t have an improper fraction.<\/p>\n<p>(For example, you would change <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0001M.gif\" alt=\"5 and 7\/4\" \/> into <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0002M.gif\" alt=\"6 and 3\/4\" \/>)<\/p>\n<h4>Examples:<\/h4>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0003M.gif\" alt=\"Reducing fractions, example 1\" \/><\/center><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0004M.gif\" alt=\"Reducing fractions, example 2\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<h3>Multiplying Fractions<\/h3>\n<p>Multiplying fractions is actually much easier than adding and subtracting them. To multiply fractions, multiply <em>straight across<\/em> the numerators and <em>straight across<\/em> the denominators. Then simplify the fraction to express it in lowest terms. That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<h4>Example:<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0014M.gif\" alt=\"Multiplying fractions\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many people find it easier to simplify the fractions before they multiply them together because it can make the multiplication step much easier to do mentally. Any factors that are shared in both the numerator and the denominator (even if they are not in the same fraction) can be cancelled.<\/p>\n<h3>Multiplying Mixed Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>The only way that multiplying mixed numbers is different from multiplying fractions is that mixed numbers must be converted into improper fractions first.<\/p>\n<p>Canceling out shared factors is very useful when multiplying improper fractions because the numerators can be very large and they are easier to work with if you can make them smaller.<\/p>\n<h4>Example:<\/h4>\n<p>j = <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0018M.gif\" alt=\"4 and 2\/3\" \/> x <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0019M.gif\" alt=\"6 and 3\/4\" \/><\/p>\n<p>j = <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0020M.gif\" alt=\"14\/3\" \/> x <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0021M.gif\" alt=\"27\/4\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0022M.gif\" alt=\"Multiplying mixed numbers\" \/><\/p>\n<p>j = <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0023M.gif\" alt=\"63\/2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>j = <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0024M.gif\" alt=\"31 and 1\/2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Dividing Fractions<\/h3>\n<p>Once you are comfortable with multiplication of fractions, division is a short jump.<\/p>\n<p>Division is another way to state that you have multiplied by the reciprocal of a number. The reciprocal is the number flipped upside down, so the reciprocal of <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0025M.gif\" alt=\"3\/4\" \/> is <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0026M.gif\" alt=\"4\/3\" \/> and the reciprocal of 8 is <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0027M.gif\" alt=\"1\/8\" \/>. You can see how this works with whole numbers:<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/americanboard.org\/Subjects\/elementary-education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/eq0028M.gif\" alt=\"Dividing fractions\" \/><\/center>When you divide with whole numbers, using multiplication and the reciprocal would be an unusual option to choose.
