Coordinate adjectives do not modify each other and are placed before the noun they modify. Use a comma to separate coordinate adjectives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <strong>juicy, sweet<\/strong> watermelon cooled everyone off.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"Adverb \u2013 Modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb \"><strong>Adverbs<\/strong><\/abbr> modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, and they often end with \u2013ly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>modifying a verb : She walked<strong> quickly<\/strong> to school.<\/p>\n<p>modifying an adjective : He became an <strong>exceptionally<\/strong> quick learner.<\/p>\n<p>modifying another adverb : She ran <strong>unbelievably<\/strong> fast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Place adverbs such as almost, even, and only with care to avoid confusion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Instead of : The movie <strong>almost<\/strong> ended before the stroke of midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Use : The move ended <strong>almost<\/strong> before the stroke of midnight.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most adjectives and some adverbs can take several forms: the <abbr title=\"Positive form \u2013 Form that an adjective or adverb can take when it does not compare a noun to others \"><strong>positive<\/strong><\/abbr>, <abbr title=\"Comparative form \u2013 Form that an adjective or adverb takes when it is describing one noun in comparison with another of its kind \"><strong>comparative<\/strong><\/abbr>, and <abbr title=\"Superlative form \u2013 Form that an adjective or adverb takes when showing the noun it modifies in relation to two or more of its kind \"><strong>superlative forms.<\/strong><\/abbr><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"75%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong class=\"lesson_subhead\">Positive <\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong class=\"lesson_subhead\">Comparative<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong class=\"lesson_subhead\">Superlative<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>calm<\/td>\n<td>calmer<\/td>\n<td>calmest<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>quiet<\/td>\n<td>quieter<\/td>\n<td>quietest<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>good<\/td>\n<td>better<\/td>\n<td>best<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>obvious<\/td>\n<td>more obvious<\/td>\n<td>most obvious<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Use the comparative form to compare two things. Use the superlative form to compare three or more things.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Comparative: The mockingbird sang louder than the sparrow.<\/p>\n<p>Superlative: Of all the birds in her yard, the mockingbird sang loudest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<section class=\"question\">\n<h4>Question<\/h4>\n<p>Choose the sentence with an adjective or adverb error.<\/p>\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>Of all the dogs at the park, Spot had the shiniest coat.<\/li>\n<li>Between Kyle and his brother, Kyle played guitar best.<\/li>\n<li>Gertrude meticulously paged through the dozens of documents and scrutinized the one with the most coffee stains on it.<\/li>\n<li>When his choices were pay a fine or go to court for the traffic ticket, Michael felt like he was choosing between the lesser of two evils.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a class=\"button button-primary q-answer\"> Reveal Answer <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"q-reveal\" style=\"display: none;\">Choice B is correct because when comparing two things (Kyle and his brother), use the comparative form of the adverb (better, not best). Choice A correctly employs the superlative adjective shiniest in a comparison of many things (all the dogs in the park). Choice C similarly uses most in a comparison of many things (dozens of documents).
