Montana History 5-12

The history certification program covers both U.S. and world history including topics such as classical civilizations and the establishment and growth of a republic. U.S. and World History are paired together to complete a history certification. This requires that program candidates pass both subject-area exams to complete certification. The content is thorough but the program is simple—prepare for and take your certification exams, complete state requirements, and start a teaching career without debt. With open enrollment, you can get started anytime and become a history teacher in just a few months.

Requirements

To maintain a trusted level of quality, each American Board teacher must meet two program entry requirements. Teacher candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and pass a background check.

Transcripts

American Board future teachers need a bachelor’s degree in any field; it does not have to match your teaching subject. Upon enrollment, provide all official transcripts to transcripts@americanboard.org.

Background Check

American Board requires that all teachers pass our mandatory background check. This is in addition to the background check that will be required by your state and local school.

What study materials do I use for the history program?

American Board’s study materials for our history programs differ slightly from those in our other subject areas. While you will still receive a study plan and a list of standards to guide your preparation, you will also need to purchase two supplemental books: Cracking the AP U.S. History Exam and Cracking the AP World History Exam.

These books are available online and typically cost around $15 each. American Board’s history exams are aligned with the content in these resources, which include chapter quizzes and two full-length practice exams to support your study.

Can I choose to just do U.S. history or world history?

No. Both U.S. history and world history are required in order to complete American Board’s program.

How long do I have to complete the history program?

Because American Board’s history program requires you to pass three exams, you will have 18 months from the date of enrollment to complete the program—rather than the standard 12 months.

Does the history program cost more because it includes both U.S. and world history?

No. Both history areas are automatically included when you enroll in history, and the cost is the same as any other subject area.
