How to Get Your Nebraska Teaching License
Step 1
Enroll in American Board’s online teacher certification program.
Step 2
Prepare for and pass American Board’s required Professional Teaching Knowledge (PTK) and subject area exams.
Step 3
Receive your teaching certificate from American Board.
Step 4
Apply to the Nebraska Department of Education for an Alternative Certificate. Once issued, this certificate expires August 31 of the 2nd year following issuance and may be renewed.
Step 5
Begin teaching in a Nebraska school.
How to Upgrade to a Nebraska Standard Certificate
Your Alternative Certificate may be continuously renewed, but in order to upgrade to an initial or standard certificate, you will need to complete one of Nebraska’s “Teaching Program Alternative Permit” pathways.
Is the Alternative Certificate renewable?
Yes! Once issued, an Alternative Certificate expires August 31 of the 2nd year following issuance and may be renewed.
