Biology (6-12)

The biology certification program covers scientific investigation, cell biology and microbiology, molecular biology, and more.

Chemistry (6-12)

The chemistry certification program covers atomic structure, periodicity, and matter; reactions and reactivity, and more.

English Language Arts (6-12)

The English language arts certification program covers comprehension of texts, oral and written language skills, and more.

General Science (6-12)

The general science certification program covers scientific investigation, biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics.

History (6-12)

The history certification program covers both U.S. and world history including topics such as classical civilizations and the establishment and growth of a republic.

Math (6-12)

The mathematics certification program covers domains including algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, and calculus.

Physics (6-12)

The physics certification program includes classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, and more.

How to Become a Teacher in Oklahoma

How to Get Your Oklahoma Teaching License

Step 1

Enroll in American Board’s online teacher certification program. 

Step 2

Prepare for and pass American Board’s required Professional Teaching Knowledge (PTK) and subject area exams.

Step 3

Apply for a one-year, non-renewable teaching credential, and obtain a full-time teaching position.

Step 4

Apply concurrently for the American Board Mentoring Program ($595).

Step 5

During your first year in the classroom, complete 1 year of the American Board’s mentoring program. In order to begin the mentoring program, you:

a. Must be teaching in your American Board certified subject area.

b. Select your mentor. After approval and training with American Board, he/she will observe you at least 4 times during the school year.

c. Work with your mentor after each observation to improve your teaching practices.

d. Once all criteria has been met, receive a certificate of completion from American Board.

How to Upgrade to an Oklahoma Standard Teaching Certificate

After completing your first year of teaching and mentorship program, apply for a five-year standard teaching certificate. This certificate will be renewed throughout your career.

Yes! Oklahoma allows candidates to certify in just World History, just United States History, or both.
